Most jurisdictions use an "income-shares" approach: they combine both parents' incomes, determine the total amount that would be spent on the children, and then divide that obligation between the parents in proportion to their incomes. The parent with less parenting time typically pays support to the other parent.

Support is based on combined income, then split by each parent's share. A parent who earns 65% of the household income generally carries about 65% of the basic support obligation.
